In order to coordinate and conduct research projects within the scope of FACES and to publish the scientific results, the FACES Science Institute (FSI) will be established.
In a first phase, this Institute will be located in one place and will be operated in close connection to a local university with an international reputation. This will allow for joint use of equipment, enable students to join research teams, perform diploma and Ph.D. work within the institution, and will allow the scientists to be involved in university teaching and maintain an academic affiliation. In a second phase, expansion institutes on other continents are envisioned. These will work in close collaboration with the FSI core institute and additional universities. The FSI will act according to the scope of FACES work on different aspects of anthropology with a focus on genetics, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and history. As a location for the main Institute, a city with a strong university and in proximity to an ethnological focal point is suggested. An excellent academic environment is mandatory to support the project. A location geographically located within easy access to a large number of ethnically different people including ancient and rare peoples groups, as well as closely related ethnic groups in such a region, would greatly help the initial studies. The head of the Institute will be an internationally renowned scientist that in parallel should also hold a teaching appointment at the University. The FSI will operate in close cooperation with the FACES museum and a joint use of documentation material and archives is anticipated. An international scientific advisory board will supervise the activities of the Institute and ensure the excellence of the scientific work.
